Jesse Pollak is a software engineer and the creator and lead of Base, the Ethereum Layer-2 network incubated by Coinbase.

Who is Jesse Pollak

Pollak founded Clef, a passwordless-identity startup that Coinbase acquired in 2017, and went on to lead Coinbase's consumer engineering before conceiving Base. He heads the Base team at Coinbase and is one of the most visible advocates for bringing users and developers “onchain.” His onchain identity is jesse.base.eth, and he refers to himself as “base builder #001.”

Notable Work

Pollak created Base, an Ethereum Layer-2 built on Optimism's OP Stack, which Coinbase announced in February 2023 and subsequently opened to the public. Under his leadership Base grew into one of the largest Ethereum L2 ecosystems, and he has driven initiatives such as Basenames and the broader onchain app economy.
