Sugartown is a consumer web3 gaming ecosystem on Abstract — created by Zynga and later run by the spinout studio D20 Labs, which announced a wind-down of all Sugartown services in July 2026.

What is Sugartown

Sugartown set out as a consumer gaming ecosystem focused on onboarding mainstream audiences to web3 through fun, accessible games and rewards. It spanned multiple games and products with a rewards layer that tied play to "rewards worth winning," aiming to be approachable for everyday players rather than crypto-native users alone.

History & Ownership

Sugartown began as Zynga's first web3 game, originally built on Ethereum. In 2024 Zynga exited web3 and sold Sugartown's products and assets to D20 Labs — a spinout led by former Zynga web3 leads Matt Wolf (mwolf) and Tommy Ngo (tommyngo) — which relaunched and ran the ecosystem on Abstract.

Wind-Down (2026)

On July 8, 2026, D20 Labs announced via visitsugartown that it would begin shutting down all Sugartown services, citing a declining market for crypto/blockchain gaming and the loss of a technical dependency needed to launch its remaining games. The team said it intends to release the full Sugartown IP — including unreleased games — to the community, move the Oras collection toward cc0, and that existing NFTs will remain in holders' wallets, with a follow-up to be finalized with counsel.
