Avalanche

Avalanche is a Layer 1 blockchain platform built around fast finality and a network of purpose-built chains rather than a single monolithic chain.

What is Avalanche

Avalanche's Primary Network is made up of three built-in chains handling different jobs: asset creation and exchange, staking and validator coordination, and smart-contract execution in an EVM-compatible environment. Around that Primary Network, independent Layer 1s (the current name for what were originally called subnets) let teams launch their own sovereign, customizable chains with their own rules, fees, and validator sets, while still settling into the shared Avalanche network.

How It Works

Consensus is achieved through the Avalanche consensus protocol, a proof-of-stake mechanism that uses repeated random sampling among validators rather than all-to-all communication to reach agreement quickly. This design is what lets the network offer near-instant transaction finality while remaining open to new validators. Avalanche Interchain Messaging lets Layer 1s and the Primary Network communicate and interoperate rather than existing as isolated islands.

Ecosystem

Avalanche is developed principally by Ava Labs (/tags/ava-labs), with the Avalanche Foundation (/tags/avalanche-foundation) supporting ecosystem growth and Team1 (/tags/team1) serving as its community and builder network. Applications built on Avalanche span decentralized finance, gaming, payments, and enterprise use cases, each able to run on a Layer 1 sized and configured for its own needs.
