What Uniswap is
Uniswap is a decentralized exchange protocol. Anyone can swap tokens or supply liquidity through its automated market maker pools, without an order book or a central operator. Uniswap Labs builds the main app and wallet; the protocol itself runs as open smart contracts.
What is Uniswap
Uniswap prices trades with liquidity pools: liquidity providers deposit pairs of tokens, and a pricing formula sets the rate as traders swap against the pool. Uniswap describes itself as the largest onchain marketplace. Its fourth version, v4, adds hooks, which are small contracts that let a pool run custom logic around swaps and deposits.
Where it runs
Uniswap v4 is deployed on Ethereum and a long list of other networks. Uniswap's own deployment list includes Base, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon and BNB Smart Chain, along with Unichain, Uniswap's own network, and newer chains such as Tempo and Robinhood Chain.
Permissioned pools and real-world assets
In July 2026 Uniswap Labs introduced permissioned pools, a v4 hook that checks an issuer's allowlist before a swap or a new liquidity position. The protocol stays permissionless; only pools that opt in apply the checks. In October 2026 SMBC Nikko and Nethermind said they are building a DeFi gateway for Japan on Uniswap v4. On November 5, 2026, Uniswap said a permissioned asset was live on its AMM for the first time, with GromaCorp bringing real estate issuance and redemption onto the protocol.
How to describe it
Call Uniswap a decentralized exchange protocol, not a company. Uniswap Labs is the team behind the app. The UNI governance token is not tracked on this page.
