Abstract Will Shut Down Dec. 15; Bridge Funds Off by Then
Abstract will shut down Dec. 15, 2026, and unbridged funds will be inaccessible, it said. It cites a 3-hour native-bridge delay; its docs say up to 24 hours.

Abstract, the Ethereum layer-2 network built by Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo Inc., will shut down on December 15, 2026, and funds not bridged off the chain by then will be inaccessible, Abstract said in an October 6 post on X. Holders can begin moving assets through the Migration Hub or the native bridge. Abstract says users of the native bridge should expect a 3-hour delay, while its developer docs say withdrawals to Ethereum currently take up to 24 hours.
The reasons Abstract gave, and what the post leaves out
Abstract wrote in its "Abstract is Winding Down" announcement that growth "began to stagnate due to our restricted DeFi ecosystem, thin liquidity on the chain, minimal institutional cross-over, and limited budget compared to competitors," and that "operating a chain focused exclusively on consumer crypto has ultimately proven to be unsustainable as a standalone model." After "extensive deliberation," it said, the team chose to wind the chain down rather than keep "exhausting resources on a chain that is operationally unsustainable and not scaling."
Abstract said more than 144 apps deployed on the chain and that brands including Red Bull Racing and Disney helped it onboard over 400,000 users. A statistics graphic in the post lists 325 million-plus transactions, $6 billion-plus in DEX volume, $40 million-plus in ecosystem revenue and 4 million-plus Abstract Global Wallets created, and labels the app count "100+." These are Abstract's own figures; Decrypt also reported the transaction, DEX volume, revenue and wallet totals as the chain's own count.
The post warns that users who do not migrate by the deadline will lose access to their funds. It does not mention Igloo's funding, names no app built on the chain, and does not say what happens to Abstract-native tokens and NFT collections whose teams do not migrate them, to Portal XP, or to Abstract Global Wallet after the deadline. It does say Abstract's "engineering & ecosystem team will work with Abstract-based projects to assist them in their migration process to different chains," and warns users to beware of "impersonation, fake migration sites, and DMs claiming to represent Abstract," per the announcement.
Igloo's chief executive supplied the funding picture the same day. In a post on X, Luca Netz wrote that Igloo "had been funding Abstract over the last 18 months" and lost "tens of millions of dollars," and that Igloo declined to launch a token, writing that "A token only works if there is something driving demand to it." He said Igloo's focus now goes to Pudgy Penguins, Pudgy NFTs and $PENGU. The Block reported that Igloo raised more than $11 million in July 2024, led by Founders Fund, to build Abstract. Descout reported Head of Ecosystem Mason's departure in August.
How to move funds before December 15
Abstract's migration page tells users to connect the wallet holding their funds on Abstract and bridge through the Migration Hub or the native bridge, adding "we suggest doing this at your earliest convenience." It lists Stargate, Relay and Jumper as alternative bridges. Abstract's developer docs say third-party bridges are "typically faster and cheaper than the native bridge, however come with different security risks."
Two details affect timing. The announcement says users of the native bridge "should expect a 3-hour delay," but the developer docs say withdrawals from Abstract to Ethereum "currently take up to 24 hours" because of a built-in withdrawal delay; neither page addresses the difference. And while Abstract's text gives only the date, the migration page's countdown clock, read at 23:32 UTC on October 6, showed 69 days and 28 minutes, which puts zero at 00:00 UTC on December 15, the start of that day.
As of October 6, the migration page's "All Project Specific Instructions" section read "No project instructions have been published yet," although the page's description says users can find migration guides for tokens, NFTs and apps.
What projects on Abstract have said
Descout's graph tags 174 entities with Abstract among their chains. By the evening of October 6 (UTC), the only project among them that Descout found responding to the shutdown directly in its tracked feeds was Hamieverse, through a 21:00 UTC repost of a founder's post quoted below.
Hamieverse said on October 5, the day before Abstract's post, that its Genesis collection is moving to Ethereum Mainnet, adding that the move "keeps the door open for future initiatives on Abstract." On October 6 at 16:00 UTC, about three and a half hours before Abstract's announcement, it set a snapshot for October 20 at 23:59 UTC for holders who move their Genesis NFT to an EVM wallet to receive an airdrop on Ethereum Mainnet, and said holders who miss it can claim afterwards on an official claim site opening one week after the snapshot. At 21:00 UTC, after Abstract's announcement, Hamieverse reposted a note from Mateen Mohammed, who says in his X bio that he founded Hamieverse: "Abstract is sunsetting, but nothing about our plans for Hamieverse changes."
Gigaverse runs on its own timetable. Its Awakening FAQ says "The Awakening ends and Gigaverse closes on Friday, October 9, 2026, 18:00 UTC," that items scanned by its backup process can be imported into Gigaverse Online accounts, and that ROMs stay in holders' wallets and "ROMs 2.0 will move them to Ethereum." The FAQ does not mention Abstract's shutdown or say which chain Gigaverse Online will use. Cambria, whose August retirement of its NFT collections Descout covered, wrote in an October 5 post "Cambria Genesis, on Ethereum mainnet" and "MMORPG w/ massive onchain stakes"; the post predates Abstract's announcement. Neither Cambria nor ZeroToHero had posted about the shutdown in Descout's feeds as of that evening.
What is still unknown
The announcement and migration page do not say where specific projects will relocate or on what schedule, or whether the Portal, Abstract Global Wallet and individual apps stay up for the full period before the deadline. Descout also covered YGG Play's sunset and three project migrations away from Abstract in July.
