Abstract's migration terms exclude XP rewards, keep accepting users' XP records - Analysis and insights

Abstract's Migration Hub terms of service, effective October 6, 2026, say the Hub's migration services do not include rewards or redemption of XP, points, streaks or badges (§7.2). The same terms commit the Hub's operator, Cube, Inc., to keeping each accepting user's XP record for six calendar months after the chain's discontinuation date, as record retention only.

XP came up within about 20 minutes. Abstract's shutdown announcement went up at 19:32 UTC on October 6 and does not mention it. It says the chain shuts down on December 15, 2026. At 19:53 UTC, @GuarEmperor, an account with about 95,000 followers, quote-posted it to ask what happens to XP and tiers. The terms do not mention tiers.

What the terms say about XP

The terms open from the "Terms of Service" button in the Hub's footer; the section links here land on the Hub's home page. They are a contract with Cube, which operates the Hub, and cover participation programs and account activity records, including XP, points, streaks and badges (§1.1). Using the Hub does not enroll anyone in a new rewards program or create an entitlement to a reward for migrating (§7.1).

Section 7.3 sets out the retention commitment:

  • It applies once a user validly accepts the terms, whether or not they migrate or use the Hub.
  • Cube keeps the existing XP information, including an offchain record, until six calendar months after normal transaction processing on Abstract permanently ends (§8.1). Any extension of the December 15 date depends on the infrastructure providers (§8.2).
  • The terms call it record retention only. Cube does not have to keep displaying XP or provide access through a portal, and the commitment creates no right to a token, airdrop, reward or redemption.
  • Cube may delete the record earlier only where applicable law, a valid deletion request it must honor, or a binding privacy commitment requires.

The terms say the record may matter if an independent project chooses to recognize past participation, but no Cube party promises any third party access, a program or eligibility. They neither rule out such a program nor promise one.

Acceptance means ticking an agreement checkbox and confirming on the Hub or the Portal. Viewing public information, holding assets, connecting a wallet or signing a transaction does not by itself accept the terms (§1.3).

Accepting also takes in Section 17, which sets individual arbitration and a class-action waiver, with a small-claims exception (§17.4) and a 30-day opt-out by email after first accepting (§17.8). Using the Hub to migrate after accepting waives some claims over that activity, including for the Cube parties' ordinary negligence but not for fraud, gross negligence, willful misconduct or breach of an express obligation, a waiver that does not reach "conduct before acceptance", "participation or rewards programs" or "the decision to discontinue Abstract" (§5.8), and §8.6 makes users responsible for completing available required exit steps before the deadlines and excludes Cube's liability for losses from failing to complete them, subject to listed exceptions. The terms also replace earlier terms for the covered services, including "participation and rewards terms", without releasing claims based on conduct before acceptance (§1.4).

The updated Abstract Portal terms, also dated October 6, carry the same commitment for users who accept that version (§12.7); accepting both does not restart the period or create a second benefit (§7.3).

Listeners' accounts and official channels

Abstract's account posted a link to an X Space at 19:52 UTC. At 20:10 UTC, @CDNHODLer, quote-posting that link, wrote that "there will be no rewards for XP", and 25 seconds later @NFTherder wrote that the Pudgy Penguins team said "No rewards for XP or badges" in the Space. These are listeners' accounts, not a transcript, and Descout found no recording. The terms are the documented position.

The announcement also warns of impersonation, fake migration sites and DMs claiming to represent Abstract, and says to cross-check the official link with Discord and other official channels (announcement). The terms name those channels: the X accounts @Abstract_Eco and @AbstractChain, plus Abstract's Discord, with migrate.abs.xyz as the official Migration Hub. A replacement channel would be announced through an existing one (§21), and Cube's support staff will not ask for a seed phrase, private key or recovery secret (§6.2).

The terms leave XP rewards out of the migration services, so an offer of XP rewards, an airdrop or a distribution that claims to come from Abstract or the Hub should be checked against the official channels before anyone connects a wallet or signs anything. For how XP worked before the shutdown, see Descout's guide to Portal XP rewards.
