Kestrel, Gunzilla's ML Anti-Cheat: How It Works and Who Gets It Free
Gunzilla's Kestrel runs server-side with no client install and bans a player's input pattern across devices; Legendary and Ancient GUNZ Validator NFT holders can get it free.

Gunzilla Games introduced Kestrel, a machine-learning anti-cheat system, on Oct. 9, 2026, saying it "recognises each player's motor signature to detect cheat-generated input" and is "now in beta in Off The Grid and open to third-party integrations." On Oct. 10, the studio's GUNZ chain account said holders of Legendary and Ancient GUNZ Validator NFTs can get Kestrel free. This guide covers what Gunzilla says Kestrel does, where it is live, and what the validator offer includes as of Oct. 12. We covered the launch and the holder offer as they were announced.
What Kestrel is
Gunzilla's Kestrel page describes it as "server-side ML anti-cheat." Per the page, Kestrel "learns the motor signature every player leaves in their inputs" and "uses it to detect, identify and ban." The page tags it as a product in the anti-cheat category with the status "Beta · live in Off The Grid." Off The Grid is Gunzilla's battle royale game.
How the detection works
Gunzilla frames Kestrel against older approaches. According to the Kestrel page, signature scanning, memory inspection and kernel drivers "look for known cheat software on the client," so "every new build of a cheat resets the race," and "every client component can be studied, patched or disabled."
Kestrel instead "models the behaviour behind the inputs." The page says each person has "a unique neuromuscular pattern — reaction latency, micro-corrections, acceleration curves," and puts the pitch this way: "A cheat can fake an outcome. It cannot fake a body." Gunzilla says aim assistance, triggerbots and macros "produce motion no human body generates," and that the model catches them "regardless of how the cheat is built." The page labels this property "Generalises to unseen cheats."
The Kestrel page lists three properties:
- Behavioural detection. The model reads the neuromuscular pattern in a player's inputs, as described above.
- Server-side only. The page says "Nothing is installed on the player's machine. No driver, no process, no attack surface," and that there is "no client component to disable, bypass, hook or reverse-engineer."
- A black box to attackers. Per the page, cheaters "never see the model, the features it reads or the thresholds it applies" and "receive a verdict, not a signal to tune against."
How bans work
Gunzilla says Kestrel bans a motor signature instead of hardware. The Kestrel page argues that hardware bans "end at the next motherboard or spoofer," while with Kestrel "new account, new machine, new network — the same hands produce the same pattern, and the ban follows them for the duration you set." It lists three enforcement points: bans are device- and account-independent, they can be time-boxed ("days, seasons or permanent"), and the player is re-identified "on first sessions after return." The phrase "the duration you set" addresses the studio operating the system, which fits Gunzilla's statement that Kestrel is open to third-party integrations.
Where it is live
The Oct. 9 post places Kestrel in beta in Off The Grid and says it is open to third-party integrations. The Kestrel page repeats the beta status and links to the validator program described below. Neither the post nor the page names an integrating studio, a general release date or terms for outside studios.
The free offer for GUNZ validators
GUNZ is Gunzilla's Layer 1 blockchain. Avalanche's own announcement of the project described it as built on an Avalanche Subnet, and Decrypt reported its mainnet live on March 31, 2025 as an Avalanche L1-based network. Validator NFTs are part of that network. Off The Grid's support article on nodes says validators help decode loot containers called HEXes and mint in-game items, earning $GUN rewards, and that each validator's hashpower depends on its rarity.
On Oct. 10, the GUNZ account wrote: "FREE Kestrel anti-cheat for our Legendary and Ancient Validators! We're grateful for our partners' support, and as a thank-you we're giving them free access to Kestrel." It added: "Verification opens soon" and "more details coming."
The Kestrel page has a section titled "GUNZ Validators Program," headed "Built for Off The Grid. Available for our partners." It says: "We're giving back to some of our strongest supporters — holders of Legendary and Ancient GUNZ Validator NFTs. If you hold one of these NFTs, you can get Kestrel completely free." A card on the page, badged "Limited time," reads "Verify your Validator NFT" and says: "Contact us to verify your Legendary or Ancient Validator NFT and participate in the program."
Eligibility as published: a Legendary or Ancient GUNZ Validator NFT. Process as published: the Kestrel page's "Contact us" action, which it says is how to verify a Legendary or Ancient Validator NFT. The Oct. 10 post says verification has not opened yet.
What has not been published
As of Oct. 12, the Kestrel page and the Oct. 10 post do not include:
- What "free access" to Kestrel covers, how long it lasts, or what a holder deploys it on. The page says only that holders "can get Kestrel completely free."
- An end date for the offer. The page badge says "Limited time" with no date.
- The date verification opens. The post says "soon."
- Detection accuracy, false-positive rates, ban counts or an appeals process. The Kestrel page gives none of these.
- Pricing or terms for third-party studios.
