Proof of Play Ceases Operations, Says Nothing About Its Abstract Arcade
Proof of Play said on August 4 it is ceasing operations and open-sourcing Pirate Nation's code, contracts and art under CC0. Its Abstract-based Arcade went unmentioned, and the site now returns a server error.

Proof of Play, the game studio behind the fully onchain RPG Pirate Nation, is shutting down. The studio announced it on its own account at 12:55 PM on August 4, 2026, in a single post that doubles as a wind-down notice and a licence release.
"When we started out, we believed games using blockchain tech had the potential to usher in a new, decentralized internet," the post reads. "Ultimately, we couldn't build a product and sustainable business that proved out this thesis at scale." The studio raised a $33 million seed round in September 2023 co-led by a16z crypto and Greenoaks, with Mercury, Firebase, Zynga and Alchemy also participating, The Block reported at the time.
What the announcement covers
The post is specific about what stops and what does not. Proof of Play says the Pirate Nation Foundation "is independent from Proof of Play and will continue supporting the $PIRATE token," and that the Foundation website will stay up. Proof of Play points, the studio's in-house reward balance, "will not be redeemable for anything." Shiba Story Go!, the studio's mobile roguelite, "has been acquired by a 3rd party and will continue to operate independently." The post does not name the buyer or give a closing date for any of it.
Cointelegraph reported the same terms, adding that at their peak the studio's Apex and Boss networks were among the heaviest gas consumers in the rollup ecosystem.
Four repositories, and one of them is not a game
The studio said it is "open-sourcing as much of our code and art as possible so it can be helpful to future builders & agents," and linked four repositories.
- piratenation-game — an "Open-source archival release of the Pirate Nation Unity client."
- piratenation-contracts — the game's smart contracts, under an MIT licence.
- piratenation-art — the "Art archive for the Pirate Nation fully onchain game," carrying a CC0-1.0 public-domain dedication and containing Combat Cards, the Founder's Pirate NFT, logos and voxel assets. The studio confirmed the Founder Pirates NFTs and the Pirate Nation artwork, IP and logos are all released under CC0.
- popbot-tool — described by Proof of Play as its "internal agent workflow tool for rapidly building software products with small teams."
That last one is the odd item in a games studio's estate sale. Its README describes an Electron application for running "a team of AI coding agents in parallel, one per ticket, bug, or PR, each isolated in its own warm git-worktree 'slot,'" released under MIT with the caveat that its Anthropic SDK dependency remains proprietary. A CC0 release of NFT artwork is unusual on its own: it hands the Founder Pirates imagery to anyone, permanently, with no reservation.
The Arcade the post does not mention
Nothing in the announcement addresses Proof of Play Arcade, the studio's Abstract-based product and the piece of the business closest to this ecosystem.
The Arcade went live on Abstract on July 31, 2025. The studio's own documentation still describes the loop in the present tense: "Buy credits - Play runs - Earn Abstract XP. The first play is free," with players able to buy multiple credits to activate score multipliers during a run. Two months after launch it had "12,000 lifetime players, 1+ million credits sold, and more than US$550,000 in revenue," according to GAMES.GG, which also reported that YGG Play had signed on as the Arcade's publishing partner with a revenue-sharing arrangement.
Descout checked the studio's web properties on August 5, roughly 24 hours after the announcement. proofofplay.com returned HTTP 404 on both the apex and www hosts, and arcade.proofofplay.com returned a 522, a gateway error indicating the origin server did not respond. docs.proofofplay.com and the Pirate Nation site were both still serving, consistent with the studio's statement that the Foundation website will remain operational. The Arcade documentation quoted above still carries no shutdown notice.
Four days after YGG Play
The Arcade's publishing partner had already gone. Yield Guild Games announced on July 6, 2026 that it would retire the YGG Play website, launchpad and rewards platform and cut 35 jobs, with July 31 as the last day of platform support, crypto.news reported. Co-founder Gabby Dizon framed it as "a heavy decision, but it is a market decision, not a product decision," citing reduced retail liquidity after the October 10 crash.
That puts two Abstract-facing publishing operations closing within four days of each other: YGG Play's last day of platform support on July 31, and Proof of Play's announcement on August 4. Each attributed the decision to market conditions rather than to the products themselves.
What is not known
The announcement leaves several things open. It does not say what becomes of Proof of Play Arcade, whether the Abstract deployment is being wound down, sold or simply left running, or what happens to credits players have already bought — the 522 on the Arcade host is an observation, not an answer. It does not identify the third party acquiring Shiba Story Go!, or give dates for any transition. It does not say what the Pirate Nation Foundation's continued support of $PIRATE consists of in practice, or how the Foundation is funded now that the studio is gone.
Full signal history for the studio is on the Proof of Play entity page.
