Mastercard Taps Base x402 With Cloudflare for AI Agent Payments

Drafted by the Descout wire deskHow this was made

base announced on Oct. 20, 2026 that Mastercard is building agent payments alongside Cloudflare, with the payments company's Agent Pay for Machines product using the x402 protocol on Base to let AI agents pay for digital services.

The disclosure came from Base's official account and positions the Coinbase-incubated Layer-2 network as the settlement venue for machine-to-machine transactions. x402 is an open payments standard that revives the long-dormant HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code, allowing software agents to settle small payments for APIs, data, and other digital services directly over web requests rather than through account-based billing systems.

Why agent payments matter

Agentic commerce requires a payment rail that can handle frequent, low-value transactions without human intervention — a use case that account-based card infrastructure was not designed for. Stablecoin transfers on a low-fee network like Base are one approach to that problem, and Mastercard's involvement signals that traditional payments firms are testing crypto rails for machine-initiated payments rather than consumer checkout.

Base has spent October 2026 steadily expanding its payments footprint. On Oct. 16 the network said Marqeta was launching stablecoin-backed cards for enterprise customers with settlement on Base, and on Oct. 9 it disclosed that Coinbase and Gennius were bringing the ONED USD stablecoin to Latin American banks starting in Argentina.

Neither Mastercard nor Cloudflare has published technical details or a launch timeline for Agent Pay for Machines. What to watch for: which merchants and API providers accept x402 payments first, and whether Mastercard extends the program beyond Base to other chains.
