Base Taps Mastercard for Agentic Payments Powered by x402 and USDC
Base said on Oct. 23, 2026 that Mastercard is helping bring the next wave of agentic finance, with agent payments powered by the x402 protocol and USDC and settled on the network. The base post framed the card network's involvement as part of an effort to make it simpler for autonomous software agents to pay for things onchain.
x402 is an open payments standard that revives the long-dormant HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code, letting software — including AI agents — pay for API calls, data and digital services in stablecoins without a human in the loop. USDC, issued by Circle, is the settlement asset in the setup described by Base, with transactions executing on the Layer-2 network rather than Ethereum mainnet.
The Oct. 23 post follows earlier groundwork. On Oct. 20, 2026, Base said Mastercard was building machine-to-machine agent payments alongside Cloudflare using the x402 protocol on Base. Base has also pointed to stablecoin payments infrastructure elsewhere in its ecosystem, including a stablecoin-backed card program with Marqeta announced on Oct. 16, 2026.
Base is Coinbase's Ethereum Layer-2 network, built on the OP Stack and led by Jesse Pollak. It has no native token; transactions are paid in ETH.
What to watch
Agentic payments have become a crowded lane for card networks and stablecoin issuers, and Base is positioning x402 plus USDC as the default rail for machine-to-machine transactions. Concrete rollout details — which Mastercard products, which merchants and when agents can transact in production — have not been disclosed in either post.
