Mastercard Builds AI Agent Payments With Cloudflare on Base's x402
Mastercard is building agent payments infrastructure alongside Cloudflare, using the x402 protocol to let AI agents pay for digital services autonomously. The base account announced the effort on Oct. 20, 2026, describing it as "Agent Pay for Machines," and Base lead jessepollak reshared the post to his audience the same evening.
The x402 protocol revives the long-dormant HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code, turning it into a machine-readable payment rail that software agents can use to settle small transactions — typically in stablecoins — without human intervention. It was introduced by Coinbase and has become a foundational piece of Base's push to make the network a settlement layer for autonomous software rather than only for human-driven apps.
Why agent payments matter
As AI agents take on tasks like booking, data retrieval and API access, they need a way to pay for those services at machine speed and granularity. Card networks and internet infrastructure providers have been racing to define that standard, and the involvement of Mastercard and Cloudflare places x402 in front of two of the largest gatekeepers of online commerce and traffic.
Neither Base nor Mastercard disclosed specific timelines, participating issuers, or the scope of the Cloudflare integration in the Oct. 20 announcement. The post did not specify which digital services agents would be able to pay for first, or whether settlement would occur onchain in every case.
What to watch
The announcement signals that agentic payments are moving from crypto-native experimentation toward mainstream payment infrastructure. Follow-up detail on how Mastercard's rails connect to x402 settlement on base — and which merchants or API providers go live first — will determine whether the standard gains real transaction volume.
