The era of generalized Layer 2 solutions is over, according to jihoz_axie, co-founder of Axie Infinity and the Ronin Network.
In a statement on May 6, Jihoz declared that L2s with "functional, specific identities" will lead the way, positioning Ronin as a prime example. He highlighted two key differentiators for the network: Axie Infinity's gaming ecosystem and its "proof of distribution" model.
Proof of distribution refers to Ronin's approach of rewarding users based on their contribution to network distribution and engagement, rather than purely financial metrics. This mechanism has been central to Ronin's strategy of building a community-driven gaming blockchain.
Jihoz's comments come as the broader L2 landscape faces increasing fragmentation, with dozens of general-purpose rollups competing for users and liquidity. His thesis suggests that chains with clear, specialized identities—like gaming on Ronin—will outperform those trying to serve all use cases.
Ronin has already seen recent traction with games like @AngryDynomites gaining momentum. The network continues to focus on player-owned economies, a vision Jihoz has championed since co-founding Sky Mavis.
The statement signals a strategic pivot for the ecosystem, doubling down on its gaming-first identity rather than expanding into general-purpose DeFi or other verticals.
