Japan Tourist Tax Refunds Coming to Avalanche via JPYC Stablecoin - Abstract blockchain breaking news

Japan Tax Free, jpyc_official and UPBOND are developing a system that would let international visitors to Japan receive eligible tax-free shopping refunds directly to their wallets on Avalanche's C-Chain, avax announced on Oct. 29, 2026.

The refunds would be denominated in JPYC, a yen-pegged stablecoin issued by jpyc_official. Transfers are planned on Avalanche's C-Chain, with JPYC going directly to the traveler's wallet, which the announcement says aims to reduce transfer fees.

Why the C-Chain

Avalanche's C-Chain is the network's EVM-compatible contract chain, the environment where most of its payment and real-world asset activity is deployed. Positioning a consumer-facing refund flow there puts a mass-market use case — tourist spending — on the same rails Avalanche has been courting for institutional and payment products, including its payments collective launched in August and the Ethena Pay Earn+ vault announced on Oct. 28.

avax framed the effort as "real-world payments built on Avalanche."

What to Watch

A Japanese-language post from @Team1JP, reposted by avax, says UPBOND and Japan Tax Free will start the service on Nov. 1, coinciding with the change to Japan's duty-free refund system, and that travelers without a wallet will be able to create one and receive the refund in one flow. Key details still to be confirmed include which retailers and refund operators will participate, how eligibility is verified at the point of sale, and whether the stablecoin balance can be spent or redeemed locally.

For Avalanche, the project adds a consumer payments vertical to an ecosystem that has leaned heavily on institutional finance and tokenized assets.
