Axie Infinity has completed its transition from squad-based combat to a single Axie format, jihoz_axie confirmed on April 2, 2026. The shift marks one of the most significant mechanical changes in the game's history.
The move away from three-Axie squad combat — the format that defined Axie Infinity during its peak popularity in 2021 and 2022 — places the entire battle experience on a single Axie per player. The change reduces the barrier to entry in terms of NFT ownership requirements while fundamentally altering team-building strategy and battle dynamics.
jihoz_axie, co-founder of Sky Mavis alongside the Ronin Network, has been teasing the updated combat experience in recent days, describing upcoming fights as "unlike anything we've released to date."
What Changes
Under the previous system, players fielded a team of three Axies, with squad composition and synergies forming the core strategic layer. The new single-Axie format concentrates gameplay around individual unit depth, ability selection, and one-on-one combat mechanics.
Sky Mavis has not yet announced a specific relaunch date for ranked or competitive play under the new system. Players and holders of Axie NFTs on the Ronin Network should watch official channels for further details on how the transition affects existing assets and progression systems.
