Avalanche Activates Helicon Upgrade on C-Chain Mainnet

Avalanche's Helicon upgrade is live on mainnet, the network's official account avax confirmed on Sept. 22, 2026. The release touches both performance and economics across the C-Chain and the staking layer.
What changed
The upgrade introduces continuous execution for the C-Chain, a change aimed at faster block processing, alongside a revised staking design. Under Helicon, staking positions auto-renew, and stakers face a 48-hour minimum staking period.
Validator requirements have also been tightened, and a new reward curve is intended to reduce AVAX issuance — the rate at which new tokens enter circulation as staking rewards.
avax framed the release as one of its largest to date and said it "lays the groundwork for larger upgrades to come," without specifying what those would be.
Context
Helicon bundles several long-discussed priorities into a single activation: throughput, capital efficiency in staking, and a more constrained issuance schedule. The reward curve change is notable for token holders because it alters the economics of securing the network, while auto-renewing staking and shorter minimum lockups lower the friction for participants who previously had to manage delegation manually.
Avalanche's protocol software is developed by Ava Labs, while the Avalanche Foundation handles ecosystem funding and research. The avax account serves as the network's primary communications channel.
What to watch
With Helicon live, attention turns to whether the new validator requirements shift the active validator set and how the reduced issuance curve affects staking yields. Network data on C-Chain throughput and validator participation will be the first indicators of the upgrade's impact.
