0xCygaar, lead engineer and CTO of Cube Labs, announced on April 9 that the Abstract blockchain team plans to evaluate a reduction in base transaction fees next week, with a potential cut from 0.045 gwei to 0.035 gwei.
The current fee level reflects the overhead of operating a ZK chain — specifically, the cost of running a ZK prover that cryptographically validates every transaction on the network. 0xCygaar noted this distinguishes Abstract from optimistic rollups, which rely on economic security mechanisms rather than active proof generation, giving them a lower infrastructure cost baseline.
Why Fees Are Higher on ZK Chains
Unlike optimistic rollups, ZK chains like Abstract must continuously generate zero-knowledge proofs to verify transaction batches. This requires dedicated computational infrastructure, which is reflected in the chain's minimum base fee. The proposed reduction to 0.035 gwei represents roughly a 22% decrease.
0xCygaar confirmed there is "wiggle room" to bring fees down while still covering infrastructure costs, and said a final decision will be communicated after the team's review next week.
Abstract is an Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain built by Igloo Inc., the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, focused on consumer applications including gaming and entertainment.
